06:33 pm - RSA This year at the RSA conference, we announced RSA BSAFE Share, which are basically free versions of our crypto toolkits. As part of the release, there is a programming contest with a grand prize of $10K. The idea is to get more developers to understand and properly utilize these technologies, and have some community support. Being a fan of free software, and security I think this is a good thing.
So if you have some free time, and are feeling creative, you should try the contest.

Yea, this reads like spam, but it is my journal, and I can spam if I want to. :-)

06:20 pm - handwritting recognition We got a fed-ex package today which RA signed for. According to the Fed-ex tracking website, it was signed for by "R. Kahn". I can only imagine what it would have parsed my signature to.

10:15 pm - cluster those PS3s OK, this is kinda of interesting. A 200 clustered PS3s made it possible to forge certificates using MD-5 for the signing algorithm.
It was only a matter of time, I mean this was brought up like 4 years ago or something. But it is good to see that it was done, and with relatively cheap hardware. The thing I find humorous is that they are claiming to have broken SSL. Nope, sorry, you broke some certificates that some people use for SSL. This is not a flaw in SSL as much as it is a flaw in the hashing algorithm used by some CAs, or a flaw in the browsers that still associate a default trust for such CAs. Nothing like using scary words to get attention.
Maybe verisign well stop using MD-2 for some of their root certificates.
Happy new year Current Mood: amused

07:09 pm - 15 years of doing nothing useful So the other day was the 15 year anniversary of when I registered foobar.com. So maybe it is time to come up with something useful to do with it.
I am open for suggestions.

10:04 pm - *warning* Ruth Anne and I got a prescription from a doctor that says we can punch people in the face. This is a real medical doctor too.
Now I know it is not ethical to share prescriptions, but I am willing to loan out my services.

11:43 am - Fox news Rant So I am sitting here in BWI airport, so I figure this is a good time to rant.
Last night in the hotel I was flipping through the channels and for some reason stopped on Fox News / O'Reilly.
They are blaming Obama for the shit storm that is brewing around Palin. Since Palin was the most outspoken against Obama (calling him a terrorist and socialist) they think his people planted the "anonymous sources" that are inside the McCain camp bad mouthing Palin.
I think the shit storm is just a perfect example of one of the reasons their campaign failed. Now I am not a Palin fan by any means, but throwing her under the bus now is just pointless and makes them look like babies. Spineless babies.
Oh, and according to O'Reilly I live in a fascist state since gay marriages are legal, and we did not vote on it. I am not even sure what the hell is up with California.
Oh, and the final gem, Fox news is a real news channel unlike MSNBC, because they do not cherry pick the stories, the proof of that is that they reported on the Palin shit storm.
Sometimes it is fun to watch the insane on TV.
In other non-related travel news. Last night I ate at "Ted's Montana Grill". Which is owned by Ted Turner, and I guess he owns some Bison farms, so most of the meat is Bison. They also have this "environmentally friendly" theme going. They had these cool paper straws instead of the standard plastic ones, they were cool. The rest of the dinning experience was un-remarkable. So yea, if I had to write a tag line for the place: "Our straws are cool". I think I have a career in marketing.

07:25 pm - safety first The Passat failed its annual state safety inspection. What was the great violation? My license plate is to weather worn so it can't be photographed and read by the traffic cameras. So I now need to go and get a new license plate. The annoying part is that I tried to get new plates two years ago because I figured it would be an issue some day, and they refused. So now I am forced, somehow I think they are going to try and extort extra money from me for this.
It is kind of sad actually, I have had the same plates (OK, plate, since I got it when MA only required and issued rear license plates) for 20 years, and now I am going to have to remember a new number. I fear change. Current Mood: aggravated

10:42 pm - gotta vote I am going to be out of town next week, so I need to go get an absentee ballot. Of course not being in a swing state, my vote does not matter. Of course I am going to be in a swing state, so maybe that helps. :-) I am equally interested in some of the local questions on the ballot, so it is all good.

09:47 pm - Memories Today is the 6 year anniversary of the time boba tried to give me food poising the night before my wedding.
To this day I am still haunted by the sounds of a bad Elvis impersonator singing Bob Seger songs.

01:41 pm - coding style I have decided I am a little anal retentive when it comes to coding style. I am not sure I care what style someone uses, but be consistent. I am having to debug someone elses code right now and the spaces / tabs / bracket thing is completely not consistent, and I am just having a hard time following the code flow. Even the format of the comments are throwing me off. So the first thing I need to do is go through the the code and fix the style so I can at least follow the code. I never realized I was so anal.
